The Hindu in school chess competition attracts good participation

The Hindu in school chess competition 2017, conducted
jointly by the Hindu and the Mysuru District Chess Association (MDCA)
at the University Lions hall auditorium, Mysuru on Saturday attracted
good participation from school children from Mysore, Mandya, Hassan,
Nanjangud and Madikeri.

Around 221 school children in the boys and girls in the U-9, U-11,
U-13,& U-15 sections took part in the tournament. The tournament was
inaugurated by Karnataka's first Grand Master M.S.Thejkumar by
lighting the lamp and also by moving the chess paws on the occasion.

Dr.C.Krishna, Chief patron, MSCA, Sudharshan, President, MDCA,
Shivarame Gowda, Hon.secretary, MDCA and Mathew, Area Sales Manager,
the Hindu were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion India's 50th Grand Master M.S.Thejkumar,
lauded, "The Hindu's initiative in conducting chess tournament for
school children in Mysore and other cities in the country and asked
the children to make use of the opportunity and play well."  He also
said that he was impressed with the large turnout of school children
and asked the parents to encourage their children in learning chess as
it helps the children to solve problems and it also develops their
thinking capacity.

The tournament was played on a Swiss league basis and seven rounds
were conducted for both the boys and girls sections respectively in
the U-9, U-11, U-13 & U-15 categories.

The top three boys received trophies, cash prize and certificates. the
boys bagging the next seven places secured medals and certificates.
The top two in the girls section in each category received a trophy,
cash prize and certificate. the next four places winners were given
medals and certificates.

The chief sponsor of the event is Thyrocare. Arrow Publications was
the Knowledge partner, Learners PU College, Mysuru was the regional
partner and Sudha Groundnuts Ltd., the refreshment partner.

M.U.Thejas with 6.5 points from seven rounds and
T.V.Bharani with 5 points from seven rounds, clinched the U-15 boys &
girls titles respectively.

V.Avinash (6 points-39.5) and Yashwanth Bharadwaraj (6 points-36)
secured the second and third places in the u-15 boys section

M.Shivanth won the title in the Boys U-13 section with
6.5 points, followed by C.Abhishek (6 points) and Aryan Anand (5.5
points) respectively.

In the girls U-15 section, Chandana Prasad with 5 points (31) secured
the second place. In the U-11 girls section, Prasiddi Bhat won the
title with 6.5 points, followed by Eshanvi M N with 6 points.

 The prizes were given away by former Karnataka state chess champion
Y.G.Vijeendra to the winners in the valedictory function held at the
University Lions

The Final Placings: U-15 boys: 1. M.U.Thejas (6.5), 2. V.Avinash
(6-39.5), 3. Yashwanth Bharadwaj (6-36).
U-13: 1.M.Shivanth (6.5), 2. C.Abhishek (6), 3. Aryan Anand (5.5).
U-11: 1. M.G.Prameeth (6-38), 2. I.Kalal (6-36.5), 3. S.Y.ashwanth (6-32).
U-9: 1. Avyuth (5-34.5), 2. Barathesh Jaishankar (5-34.5), 3. Ashith
Kumar Gowda (5-34).
Girls: U-15: 1. T.V.Bharani (5-33), 2. Chandana Prasad (5-31).
U-13: 1. Dhanyashree (5.5), 2.Anamika Menon (5-39.5).
U-11: 1. Prasiddi Bhat (6.5), 2. M.N.Eshanvi (6).
U-9: 1. Sharadhi Shastry (5-37), 2. Yashika R Joshi (5-31.5).
