India has been producing talented chess players who have won laurels in the International level. The game got a big boost after the exploits of Vishwanathan Anand in the world chess scene. He became the World champion, and inspired many a player to take up the game in the country. P.Harikrishna, Humpy Koneru, K.Sasikiran, Harika D, P.Negi, S.S.Ganguly, Abhijeet Gupta, Tania Sachdev, S.Vijayalakshmi, Manuel Aaron, A.Kunte, D.Barua are some of the top players from our country.
Mysuru Chess:
Mysore City and chess are synonymous. The Mysore District Chess Association began in 1985 and the city has seen players in the boys and girls sections who have gone on to become National and State champions in different age categories.
The sport has been flourishing in this city and many a talented players have made their mark in the International and National level. The game developed due to the good work done by the administrators like Late Sri. Krishna Rao, Pratap, Somnath, Late Prof.S.K.Ananda Thirtha, L.Seshadri, N.M.Biddappa and Nagenda M.
Regular tournaments are conducted by the Mysore District Chess Association on a weekly basis for all age categories. and All India tournaments are also conducted by the MDCA from time to time.
M.S. Thejkumar, IM, who is the only chess player in Karnataka who has achieved 3 GM norms, is the top rated chess player in the State (Rating 2487). He has done well in the International and National level. He is only player from Karnataka to win the National 'B' chess championship. A former National U-25 chess champion, Thejkumar is a Ekalavya award winner and was part of the Indian Railways team which won the gold medal in the World Railway championships.
Girish A Koushik, the former World U-10 chess champion is from this city. He also won the Asian under-13 championship and Commonwealth medalist. An International Master (Rating-2401) , at present, he has the talent in him to achieve the Grand Master title in the days to come.
Players like K.Vijaykeerthi (former National U-12 champion, Asian bronze medalist), N.Sanjay (presently in Bengaluru), M.Kavana, M. Kavyashree, Y.G. Vijeendra (Former State champion), P.R.Rekha, H.R. Manasa, M. Tulsi, Madhuri, Gangamma, Anagha (National U-7) girls chess champion, M.P.Ajith (World Amateur championship silver medalist & National Amateur chess champion), S.N.Jatin (World Amateur U-15 boys champion), have represented the country in the International National level and state in the National level and performed well.
