M.S. Thejkumar (Live Rating 2500)

M.S. Thejkumar, GM, (Live Rating 2500) is the first Grand Master from Karnataka. He achieved his remaining 1.60 ELO points taking part in the FOMENTO All India FIDE rating chess tournament 2017 in Goa on 6.9.17. He becomes India's 50th Grand Master. An employee of South Western Railways (Mysore), he was part of the Indian Railway team which won the gold in the World Railway championship. He is the only Karnataka player to win the National 'B' title. An Ekalavya award winner, Thejkumar won the Dhamso International chess festival title in the tournament held at Sri Lanka from 27th April to 3rd May 2017 and also finished second in the International chess tournament held in France recently. Thejkumar won the 8th Kandy Open International Rated chess tournament 2017 at Polgolla, Kandy from 25-30th August by securing 10 points from 11 rounds. Earlier, Thejkumar had also won the Sri Lanka Open International rating chess championship 2017, held at Kurunegala, near Colombo, from 7-11th August 2017 by securing 10 points from 10 rounds.


Girish A Koushik

The former World U-10 chess champion is from this city. In June 2019, Girish A. Koushik became India's 63rd Grand Master at the 37th Balaton International chess festival in Hungary. Girish becomes Karnataka's third Grand Master after M S Thej Kumar and G A Stany. He had won the Asian under-13 championship and is a Commonwealth medalist. Earlier in his career, as he amassed one title after another, completing his first GM norm as far back as 2011, Girish was identified as one of India's brightest young prospects.
